The history behind Ama Yangri:  2024 Updated

Ama Yangri is a beautiful destination that is also equally important for its religious aspects. It is said that during the  reign of King Jagat Prakash Malla, a harmful disease known as “Kal Nenni” spread over the area killing many people. In the meantime, a person was possessed by divine power and was informed by a guru named Surya, that the person could stop the disease from spreading. As King Jagat Prakash Malla was informed about the person, he immediately sent his messengers to invite the guru to Nepal.

The Guru accepted King’s invitation and came to Nepal and end the disease “Kal Nenni”. The King offered the guru land near areas of Ama Yangri as a gesture of gratitude, where he formed a monastery of various sizes called Gompa. Mahaguru Padmasambhava established three types of Gompas, large, medium, and small, on the slopes of the Yangri mountains.

From the top of Ama Yangri, dozens of Himalayan peaks can be seen, including Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal, Gaurishankhar Himal, Bhairav Takura, Gyaljen Peak, Yalung Ri Himal, Kimshung, Bhemdang Himal, Yansa Chenji Himal and many more.

Route while travelling to Ama Yangri

1. Tarkeghyang-

The Tarkeghyang village which is located at an elevation of 2560 meters above sea level looks absolutely beautiful in the morning. The sun’s rays barely reach this area as it is located in the low valley. A community of 145 households has a 600-year back history.

Here, the Sonam Loshar is mostly celebrated as a major occasion in a beautiful way. Apart from this, about 13-14 other festivals are celebrated each year. This village is believed to hold significance to the Hyolmo community which celebrates several kinds of festivals, and worship gods on auspicious day.

2. Ama Yangri Base Camp-

Ama Yangri Base Camp is situated at a height of 3200 meters above sea level, it takes around two hours of walk from Base Camp to reach the top of Ama Yangri. You will be mesmerized by the view of the beautiful peak of Ama Yangri and the surrounding Himalayan ranges during the walk.

In the Local language, Ama Yangri also known as Lakshmi Danda, where Yang refers to Lakhsmi or Wealth, and Ri refers to a high place or a hill. The trail to Ama Yangri top from Base Camp is very steep but not difficult.
