Hosaena: Perfect Holiday Destination in Ethiopia
Hosaena, also called Hosaina is a beautiful town situated in southern Ethiopia and is the administrative center of the Hadiya Zone. It is located at an elevation of 2177 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by Limo woreda and was earlier surrounded by it.
This city is surrounded by lush hills and valleys which is well known for its coffee production. In addition, Hosaena is an easy way to explore nearby sites such as Hadiya Zone Hot Springs, the Bale Mountains National Park, and the Sidi and Kacha waterfalls.

Hosaena Market is one of the largest markets in the city where both local and imported goods are available.
Chencha Village:
Chencha is a beautiful and traditional village situated approximately 50km from Hosaena. This village is mostly known for its unique culture, language, and architecture.
Shashamene:
This town is known for its Rastafarian community who moved there in the 1950s, where their culture and beliefs are explained at the Shashamene Rastafarian Museum.
Bale Mountains National Park:
It is a national park with a number of ecosystems and diverse wildlife, including species like the Ethiopian wolf and mountain nyala.
Hadiya Zone:
The Hadiya Zone is an area is one of Ethiopia’s most fertile and is the place for one of the biggest coffee plantations in the country.
Lake Awasa:
Lake Awasa is a beautiful lake situated about 20km away from Hoasaena and is known for fishing, boating, and hiking.
Markato Village:
This village is a traditional market well known for handicrafts, and its poetry is sold in the local market.
Best Time to Visit Hosaena
The best time to visit Hosaena, Ethiopia is during the dry season i.e. October-February. During this month, the weather is normally sunny and dry, and moderate also a lower chance of heavy rainfall. However, if you prefer less crowds, then visit during the month of March-April, or September-October.
How can you reach Hosaena?
- By Air: Arba Minch Airport around 135km away from Hosaena is the closest airport to the town, then you can book a cab to get to Hosaena.
- By Road: From Addis Ababa, you can drive to Hosaena by bus or car, which takes around 6-7 hours.
Traditional food to try in Hosaena:
Injera: An Ethiopian dish with spongy, fermented flatbread made from teff flour.
Doro Wat:
A tasty dish a spicy stew made of chicken consisting of tomato, onion, and berbere, with a mixture of ginger, garlic, and dried chilies.
Kitfo: Dish made with raw minced beef flavor with chili powder and other spices, served with injera and side dishes.
Tips: Small pieces of lamb or beef that have been grilled and served with tomato, onion, and green chili pepper.
Shiro: A slow-cooked stew of chickpeas with tomatoes and berbere spice, served with injera.
Kik Alicha: A dish consisting of turmeric, ginger, and garlic-based mild yellow split pea stew.
Gomen: Sauteed in oil and flavored with berbere spice, a mildly bitter dish consists of collard greens, garlic, and ginger.
