India’s Lowest Monsoon Rainfall: According to the EI Nino weather pattern, India’s monsoon rainfall this year was its lowest since 2018. August made the driest in more than a century, the state-run weather department said on Saturday.
India’s Lowest Monsoon Rainfall, Shortage of staples
The monsoon nearly brought 70 percent of the rain to the country, which is vital for India’s $3 trillion economy. The country needs to water crops and staples and replenish reservoirs and aquifers.
The monsoon shortage could make staples like sugar, pulses, rice, and vegetables more expensive and lift overall food inflation. However, it is said that India is the world’s second-biggest producer of rice, wheat, and sugar, to impose more curbs on exports of these commodities.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a statement, From June to September, the rainfall over the country was 94 percent of its long-period average, since the lowest in 2018.
El Nino is warming Pacific waters, typically resulting in drier conditions over the Indian subcontinent. Additionally, this year, the monsoon was also uneven with June rains 9 percent below due to delayed arrival but July rains back to 13 percent above average.
As per the IMD record, August month was the driest on record with a 36 percent deficit, but again in September rainfall revived and the country received 13 percent more rainfall than normal.
Moreover, the country’s people are expecting to receive normal rainfall from October to December. Also, the weather department said that, adding that temperatures were likely to remain above normal in most of the country during October month.
