Bratabandha
Bratabandha is a Hindu ceremony which is practiced in some parts of India and Nepal. It is a ritual that signifies a boy’s transition into manhood and is typically performed when the boy is 8 or 9 years old. The Bratabanda ceremony is one of the most important rituals for the Brahmin as it sets his rights and responsibilities as a Brahmin.
The boy is given a holy thread, known as yajnopavita or Janeu, during the ceremony. The thread is made of cotton or silk and has three strands that indicate the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). The thread is worn over the left shoulder and under the right arm as a symbol of the boy’s loyalty to his faith and his religious journey.
How is Bratabandha performed?
The Bratabandha ceremony is usually performed with the help of the priest, including chanting mantras and offering prayers to the gods.
The boy is regarded as dvija (twice-born), after the ceremony, and is expected to follow the rules and duties of a Hindu householder. Bratabanda is an important ceremony of Hindu culture, and the family and community celebrate it with great joy and happiness.
