Yamaha R15M Review

R7 Inspired Styling

The design of the Yamaha R15 has consistently been inspired by its larger Yamaha sibling models.

In the past, it took significantly from the iconic R1. It repeats this process by transmitting the R-Series DNA.

Significant parallels can be noticed with the Yamaha R7, with minor references to the deceased R6 as well.

It is the same Class D unit shared with the Yamaha MT 15. Yamaha has put more focus on improving aerodynamics.

The front section sports an all-new Bi-Functional LED Projector headlamp with unique LED DRLs.

The mirrors, visor, and front profile have undergone a slight modification. It now appears somewhat stronger and heavier than before.

Likewise, there are random modifications to the placement of branding.

Additionally, the side profile has undergone slight modifications. Further, the molded edges are now slightly stronger.

Minor design modifications are made to components such as the side fairing, split-seat configuration, and exhaust pipe.

With the exception of that, the rear LED tail light remains unchanged.

R15M vs R15 v4: Visual Differences

The R15 v4 and R15 M are identical motorcycles.

It is important to observe that the R15M and R15v4 are visually and mechanically identical.

On the contrary, the R15M variant is significantly more costly and includes six distinct extras.

To start off with, the Yamaha R15M is exclusively available in metallic gray.

Other visual elements include a 3D R15M Logo, Blue-colored R15M Fork Caps, Golden Colored Brake Caliper, a Gray-colored Swingarm, Faux Carbon Seat Covers with Embroidered Logo, and a Gray-colored Muffler Guard.

Currently, R15 v4 is not available in the Nepali market.

These add-ons can be regarded as standard until the official release of R15 v4 in Nepal.

Performance

Yamaha R15 v4 is powered by a 155cc, Single-Cylinder, 4-stroke, 4-valve, Liquid-cooled FI engine and can generate a max power of 18.4PS at 10000rpm and a max torque of 14.2Nm at 7500rpm.

Moreover, it is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with an assisted slipper clutch.

A minor modification is made to the powertrain.

Note: “On a direct comparison with the R15 V3, the R15M generates 0.2PS less power but 0.1Nm more torque. Furthermore, the peak torque comes in at 7500rpm instead of 8500rpm.”

Despite being a minor modification, the performance of the new R15M is slightly more quick.

Familiar Features

The Yamaha R15M does not debut with any revolutionary new features. Nonetheless, significant adjustments in quality of life occur.

The innovative new features of the Yamaha R15M have made it more effective and secure.

Braking Performance

The front of the Yamaha R15M is fitted with a 282mm disc, while the rear features a 220mm disc. As before, dual-channel ABS is included as standard equipment.

Incredible acceleration feedback is provided.

Both the front and rear brakes operate perfectly. It is extraordinarily refined, perceiving even small nuances.

Note: “Unsurprisingly, it allows riders to stay at higher speeds for a longer period. And, the rider remains in control with confidence across all speed limits.”

Tyres

The Yamaha R15 v4 is equipped with 17-inch tires, although the dimensions of the tires remain consistent.

It gets a 100/80 at the front and 140/70 Radial at the rear. The efficacy of the tires is outstanding and remains consistent with expectations.

Note: “It excels in high-speed agility in combination with good braking performance. Moreover, it continues to maintain confidence in tight cornering as well.”

Suspension

The configuration of the suspension has been modified.

A Linked-Typed Monocross KYB Telescopic USD suspension is affixed to the bike. In accordance with its status as a performance vehicle, the suspension calibration is relatively firm.

Furthermore, the rear suspension exhibits insufficient travel.

Consequently, the rider may experience a mild sense of discomfort when traversing expansive plot holes and speed breakers.

Off-road travel and rugged environments should be avoided whenever possible.

Seat Comfort and Pillion

Seat comfort and the capacity to transport a pillion are both insufficient.

As a result of the newly installed clip-on handlebars, the riding position is significantly more aggressive.

As an R15M, this is to be expected.

It is still annoying in most cases. The shoulders and arms are experiencing an accumulation of pressure.

Note: “Moreover, the pressure is further multiplied with a pillion or going downhill. The pressure is manageable on city roads and highways, but it will test your patience during off-road conditions.”

Fuel Tank Capacity and Mileage

The Yamaha R15M has a fuel tank capacity of 11 liters.

The fuel reservoir may initially appear to be smaller. However, its high mileage renders it manageable.

We achieved a maximum of 50 km3/l and a minimum of 40 km3/l during our exercise. Therefore, an average mileage of 45 km/l should result from regular cycling.

On a full fuel, riders can travel anywhere from 440 to 550 kilometers.

New Digital Instrument Meter

The Yamaha R15M features an entirely changed instrument cluster.

It is an advanced, all-digital meter that provides an abundance of offer details. A novel toggle switch has been incorporated to navigate between various TRIP and INFO options.

Riders have the capability to monitor critical data such as average speed, average mileage, real-time mileage, coolant temperature, and battery level, among others.

Note: “The riders can also toggle between two riding modes: Street and Track. Unfortunately, there is no mechanical difference in those modes.”

A subtle visual modification is made to the meter. Lap timers and 6000 rpm are the starting points of the Track Mode.

There is also an option to customize the meter itself.

It will inform riders to change the Welcome Message, Shift Light Type, Meter Brightness, Metric, and More.

It includes Yamaha Y-Connect Bluetooth Connectivity as standard.

It will provide access to additional features and functions, including a fuel consumption tracker, parking location, maintenance recommendations, and a rev dashboard.

Quick Shifter and Traction Control System

New additions are among the most recent features.

Standard equipment on the R15M includes a Quick Shifter and Traction Control System. Both contribute to the safety and speed of the sports Bike.

Does a 155cc motorcycle require such components? No, that should be the answer.

Nevertheless, it significantly enhances the overall riding experience.

Quick adjustments are entertaining to use while traveling by automobile. Additionally, optimal traction is provided by the Traction Control System to prevent slip-ups.

Notably, when necessary, both the Quick Shifter and Traction Control can be deactivated.

Note: “Traction Control can be turned off via the Meter. However, it is a hassle for the Quick Shifter. To do it accurately, please consult the Motorcycle Manual.”

My Experience with Yamaha R15M

Refined Performance

The Yamaha R15M is equipped with a 155cc (or tried and true) engine. Beyond all comparisons, the degree of refinement is entirely unique.

It is incredibly enjoyable to ride on, with virtually no vibrations across all RPM ranges.

Furthermore, performance is consistent throughout the powerband. Additionally, the light and fast enhance the overall experience.

The low range does require improvement. Nevertheless, the midrange is absolutely stunning.

The engine’s desire to accelerate is consistent with the Yamaha brand.

The 6-speed transmission is also exceptionally well-tuned. The gearing ratios are high enough to avoid the need for frequent transitions between them.

In addition, no apparent difference can be made between the gears. Nonetheless, every bit of supplementary equipment improves the overall experience.

Further, overtakes can be executed at a higher ratio without the need for a downshift.

VVA Addiction

There will come a time when performance starts to drop beyond 7000rpm.

At that precise moment, Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) is activated. The performance consequently feels more forceful than before.

Simply put, the VVA performance is so thrilling that motorcyclists will desire to maintain it within that range.

Note: “There were a few instances where I got literal goosebumps after experiencing the magic of the VVA. So much so that I pushed the bike across that 7450 rpm limit whenever I came across an open road.”

If the VVA were a substance, I would surely be an addict.

Real World Practicality

Both in the city and on open highways, the Yamaha R15M succeeds.

Although maintaining the riding position requires dedication, it does cultivate the inner strength necessary to persevere through the discomfort in pursuit of that thrilling experience.

It defies traffic and difficult conditions with ease. Furthermore, it is most beautiful while traveling alone.

Surprisingly enjoyable are the approaches and moves.

It falls curves with the precision of a heated knife in butter. The precision of the cornering is highly precise and accurate.

Note: “However, it fails to maintain that same magic in off-road conditions. The combination of the committed seating position and stiffer suspension creates an uneasy feeling.”

This motorcycle is certainly not designed for off-roading. On the roadways of Nepal, however, off-road vehicles are normal.

It is possible for people to go on long-distance tours.

With minimal effort, the 155cc engine can power through nearly every situation. The riding position, nevertheless, causes a slight regression.

Note: “It is advisable to take breaks and plan during these kinds of long drives. Moreover, the Yamaha R15M is more about exploring solo rather than taking a pillion.”

In all honesty, the pillion (whether light or hefty) will decrease the enjoyment.

It should be simple to refuse the pillion seat, given that the pillion will be unable to remain content in the uncomfortable, elevated position.

Battle with Competition

The Yamaha R15M is a competitor of the KTM RC 200.

Both are city-friendly sports bikes with an aggressive design. Furthermore, both motorbikes have effectively established a standard for an ideal integration of functionality, design, and features.

The KTM RC 200 features a larger displacement engine, higher-end hardware, and a slightly more urban-friendly position.

Note: “However, it cannot match the refinement of the Yamaha R15M. Plus, the Japanese machine is much more pocket-friendly with its road tax and mileage.”

However, the KTM is seen as a straightforward performance motorbike. In contrast, the Yamaha appears to be a compact and enjoyable-to-ride bike.

The R15M’s design is incomparably superior to that of the RC 200.

An additional bridge connects the Suzuki Gixxer SF and Suzuki Gixxer SF 250.

Both Gixxers provide simplified functionality, rapid mobility, and economical pricing. Despite the absence of premium features, riding a Gixxer is a fantastic experience.

Shortcomings

We have previously discussed this issue.

One potential drawback that warrants consideration is the layout of the seats.

At times, the committed riding position will be uncomfortable and excruciating. Eventually, passengers will adjust to the seating arrangement.

However, off-roading will never again be enjoyable.

If you are thinking about the purchase of a new R15M, the reclining position should be your top priority.

You cannot make a mistake with the R15M if you are willing to accept it.

Conclusion

The Yamaha R15M isn’t perfect. Then again, nobody is.

Note:  “Despite its faults, the new R15M is an excellent motorcycle. More importantly, it is a fun machine that brings the track feel to the open roads.”

Very little else can compete with the legendary R15 in terms of everything it contributes.

That theory was further validated with its fourth iteration.

It literally embodies the term “perfectly imperfect.”
